Because of the shorter life span of our pets, we stress the importance of an annual wellness examination where we will address any of your concerns, perform a thorough physical exam, and recommend and provide appropriate preventative care. Regular wellness exams will help you to have a pet that lives a long and healthy life. We offer a wide range of veterinary services to obtain this goal:
Anesthesia: We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, including for our older or high-risk patients. We also use modern equipment such as electrocardiograms, pulse oximeters and doppler blood pressure monitoring to improve the ability to monitor your pet's vital signs during anesthesia.
Behavioral Counseling: We can provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling and aggression. If you have more serious problems that require more in depth analysis and treatment we may refer you to Dog's Best Friend (and cats too!) for a behavioral consultation.
Boarding: We provide pet boarding as a service to our clients. All boarders receive personal attention from our caring staff. Pets may be dropped off and picked up during regular business hours Monday through Saturday. See this website Boarding Suite section for more details.
Dentistry: Our dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, dental X-rays, tooth extractions and minor oral surgery.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services: Our hospital is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your pets' complete health care needs.
Dietary Counseling: We will provide guidance regarding your pet's nutritional needs for each life stage, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance and performance.
Emergency Care: Please call our main telephone number for instructions for after-hour emergencies.
Hip dysplasia Screening: In addition to the older OFA technique, we are certified in the newer, more accurate screening method called PennHIP (see the following website: PennHIP) We recommend this early screening for hip joint laxity (which strongly correlates with the eventual development of hip arthritis called "hip dysplasia"), in most dogs before using for breeding purposes and in all high risk large breed dogs at 3-4 months of age. This early screening not only helps owners interested in breeding their dog, but can now be used to prevent hip dysplasia in at risk dogs. Surgeons at the UW Veterinary School have recently researched and developed a simple surgical technique called JPS (Juvenile Pubic Symphyseodesis) that we can perform at 12-18 weeks of age along with a pet's spay/neuter procedure. If done at a young age, it has been shown to "tighten" the hips and help prevent the eventual development of this common, painful condition. Click here for more information about PennHIP screening and JPS.
Individualized Flea, Tick and heartworm Control Programs: We develop programs for the specific needs of your pet and your own particular environmental situation. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas in your house, in your yard and on your pet.
Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing. We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations.
Radiology Services: Our on-site X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders.
Specialist Consultations: We subscribe to and regularly use the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) to consult with over 150 different veterinary specialists. This service helps us maintain our knowledge of the most current veterinary medical information as well as get specific advice on diagnostic and treatment options for more difficult or complicated cases. In some cases we will refer our clients for specialized tests or care to other specialty veterinary referral institutions in Madison such as the UW Veterinary School, Surgical Options, and the Veterinary Emergency Service.
Surgical Services: Our state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a wide variety of surgical procedures.
Permanent identification: We offer microchip identification. Pharmacy: We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, shampoos, flea and tick control products and heartworm preventatives to meet the needs of your pet. We also carry a full line of prescription diets.
